Vasco da Gama is a beautiful city on the Mormugao Peninsula in Goa, Western India, which is the best tourist place. The largest city of Goa is located on the Vasco da Gama Mormugao subcontinent.

Situated to the South-West of the capital of Goa, Panjim, the city of Vasco Da Gama was named after the great voyager Vasco Da Gama.

This city is found on the narrow Western end of the Marmagoa peninsula. The mouth of the Zuari river faces this city.

In 1543, the Portuguese captured it. The city is placed very strategically so it was one of the busiest ports of India. The Portuguese had the city till 1961.

After this Vasco Da Gama was annexed to Goa when Goa was annexed to India.

Vasco- Da-Gama today, is a successful city with the Indian Navy’s Goa Naval Area base located at Vasco.

The Dabolim airport is controlled from here.

Vasco Da Gama – A Rendezvous

Set amidst greenery, water, and the ports, Vasco is a key shipping center.

The container vessels and the iron ore barges dot the city’s feature. These, however, are actually clogging the mouth of the Zuari River.

After the Konkan Railway was completed, the mainstay of Goa shifted from Vasco to Margao.

Bogmalo Beach: This beach at the end of the city is very beautiful and provides the perfect scene for a painting or a photograph.

This would have been even more beautiful if the multi-story buildings had not come up.

This is located 8 km away and is in the South East of the town.

The main fact of this beach is that it has a good combination of serenity and fun.

Though the beach is not as crowded as Anjuna and Calangute, yet it is not short of excitement.

Mormugao Port: This natural harbor is very important from a business point of view. However, one can pay a visit to the lovely port.

This is because there are many cruise ships that sail here every day. They take the tourist round a trip to Goa.

Museum

The Naval Aviation Museum: This is the first type of museum inaugurated in India.

It opened in 1998 and has the history of Naval Aviation, different types of aircrafts, weapons, sensors, safety equipment, rare photographs all showing Goa’s fight for freedom.

The museum also has artifacts.

Thus, with the main town of Vasco, the carnival city lined in a straight line by parallel roads with interconnecting lanes, the city is mainly today a quiet city located on the western tip.

The Mormugao port lies just 4km away from the middle of the city.

This port is now conducting and operating container vessels and iron barges to countries like Japan and Korea.

Fairs and Carnivals

The Shree Damodar Bhajani Saptah Fair: This is held in the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar. It is the month preceding the Indian festival of Raksha Bandhan. It is held once in a year.

Shigmo Carnival: This is celebrated in Goa with a street parade and floats. All of Goa participates in this carnival.
